In, “One day in the life of Ivan Denisovich”, Alexander Solzhenitsyn uses characterization as a literary technique to portray the type of person Ivan is. Ivan, also known as Shukhov is living in a prison camp for a crime he did not commit. Living life in this camp is extremely taxing. However, no matter what Shukhov is given, he is always thankful, grateful and hardly complains. “Shukhov gazed at the sun and looked happy, a smile on his lips. What had he to be happy about? His cheeks were sunken, he lived strictly on his rations, he earned nothing. He spent all his Sundays muttering with the other Baptists. They shed the hardships of camp life like water off a duck’s back.” (Solzhenitsyn 36.) Solzhenitsyn uses characterization to impact and emphasis that Shukhov didn’t deserve to be treated the way he was; yet it all didn’t matter to him. Shukhov was thankful just to be alive and healthy and that was all that mattered. All Shukhov wanted to do was to do his time in the camp and live his life. No matter how tough and hard life was, Shukhov just put it all behind him and just took life as it is.

"Dawn" follows the story of a man named Elisha, who has been assigned to become a murderer in the midst of a religious war. He is supposed to kill a captured British soldier as a reprisal for the execution of a Jewish prisoner.
He does not want to carry out the assignment. The story revolves more prominently around the internal conflict Elisha is facing after the death of John, the British soldier, and David, the Jewish prisoner. He is worried that the deaths may be tied to him and that everyone will suspect him for a murderer. One Day In the Life of Ivan Denishovich by Alexander Solzhenitsyn, imagery is used effectively to portray to the readers an actual feeling of what happens to the main character in his average day. A very in depth description of Ivans surroundings. This literary device is first established within the first section of reading when a account of the early hours of his day are explained. "... everything outside still looked like middle of night when Ivan Denisovich woke up ... it was pitch dark except for the yellow light cast on the window by three lamps..." (Solzhenitsyn, 1). This depiction of how Ivan wakes in the morning gives specifics of what he i seeing. In throughly explaining the imagery in the cell, the reader can fully picture the entire scene and see exactly what Solzhenitsyn wanted to express in his book. The Imagery in the book gives the readers proper understandings and the right view of "One day in the life of Ivan Denishovich".

In the book, Animal Farm, written by George Orwell, irony is used in the story to explain how things or events in life won't or didn't turn out the way you want it to,and events and "turn-outs" will suprise you because it wasn't expected. For example one event that took place in the story that potrays irony is when the pig named Napoleon was accused for destroying a windmill the animals have worked so hard to build, because animals saw him to be a corrupt dictator, but it turned out to be the pig named snowball, which was a more democratic pig. Another example is the pigs banned the animals to walk on two feet based on the summarized version of the 7 commandments, "Four legs good, two legs bad", but in the end the pigs were walking on two feet. And also its interesting how a farm tries there best to make a great government or just a regular general government, and turns out to be corrupt in the middle of the story, Irony was used to explain and tell how life truly is, to basically say things cant be perfect, things or events might not come out the way you want it to, life is unpredictable.

In the novel " The Communist Manifesto " Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels use rhetoric to persuade the readers about Communism . Marx writes, "You are horrified at our intending to do away with private property. But in your existing society, private property is already done away with for nine-tenths of the population." No matter what the bourgeois say , Communism doesn't keep people from appropriating the products of labor . Then , the Manifesto states some of the objections of Communism , some people are arguing that no work will be done if private property is emlinated . But this explains that the bourgeois have been lazy from the begining , and proves that those who work don't aquire things , and those who aquire things don't work . Later in the book , Marx goes on to explain how Communism is being spread all over the contries , through literature . He goes on to further explain how each country is going about with Communism . The Manifesto ends with a summary on the role of Communists as they work with other classes . They aim for the workers more than the other classes but always in the context of the whole Communist movement . The Communist eventually overthrow the bourgeois , therefore spreading Communism to the countries that have revolted against it .

In the book "fallen Angels", Walter Dean Myers uses Foreshadowing to show what will happen to the characters. For example, when almost all the soilders said that they were not going to make it through the war, that shows through foreshadowing how some of them will die. Another example is how Jenkins had said that his dad had forced him to go into war, and how he did not want to be there shows through foreshadowing that Jenkins will die. Through these examples Walter Dean Myers used foreshadowing to show what will eventually happen in the story

In Lord of the Flies, William Golding uses a variety of sensory details to develop the setting. the setting of Lord of the Flies is an island with numerous amounts of distinct characteristics. this island is described by William Golding in unique ways such as detailing the lack of resources, the weather conditions, and the fact that the island stood alone. Lord of the Flies takes place on an island that boys become stranded on after a plane crash. "A tree exploded in the fire like a bomb. Tall swathes of creepers rose for a moment into view, and went down again. The boys screamed at them." (Golding 46.) Golding details the occurrences that made surviving more difficult for the boys, very well. This plane crash leads these boys to have to take care of themselves with no adult supervision. the characteristics and details of this island leads to the struggle the boys encounter when trying to survive.

In Fahrenheit 451, Ray Bradbury uses symbolism to show how clueless society had become. In the novel, the main character is a fireman named Guy Montag. In his world, people aren’t allowed to read books and all books must be burned by firemen. After meeting an interesting girl, Montag questions the world he lives in and begins reading books, despite it being against the law. In this novel, many people are clueless of the outside world and most aren’t very intelligent. In the story, Montag’s wife took too many pills and was treated on at home. When she wakes up, she is completely unaware of what happened. “His wife said, ‘I don’t know why I should be so hungry.’ ‘You-’ ‘I’m hungry.’ ‘Last night,’ he began. ‘Didn’t sleep well. Feel terrible,’ she said. ‘God I’m hungry. I can’t figure it.’ ‘Last night-’ he said again. She watched his lips casually. ‘What about last night?’ ‘Don’t you remember?’ ‘What did we have a wild party or something?’” (Bradbury 18-19). Throughout the book, Montag’s wife, Mildred, constantly forgets many things, no matter how important they are. Because their world is without books, people had become much less intelligent and became more careless. Mildred also had a conversation with her friends later on. “I’ve heard that too. I’ve never known any dead man killed in a war. Killed jumping off buildings, yes, like Garcia’s husband last week, but from wars? No.” (Bradbury 97).This conversation also shows how dense Mildred and her friends had become, living in their society. The characters and their conversations symbolize little they knew and how much society had fallen in terms of intelligence. Throughout the whole novel of Fahrenheit 451, Ray Bradbury effectively used characters to symbolize the clueless society of the novel.

In the novel “Animal Farm” by George Orwell, symbolism is used as a guide to better understand the concept of a dictatorship society and also serves as a hook that draws the reader into the novel. Starting the main focus off at a place called Manor Farm, Orwell brings to life many animals as well as awakens each of their intricate personalities in order to understand where they come from. They each become sick of the way the farm is run by their owner and shortly after, they overthrow it. The newly erected Animal Farm faces many problems based on the way the animals are running it. Tensions rise, personalities clash, and so the story unfolds. “Word had gone round during the day that Old Major, the prize middle white boar, had had a strange dream on the previous night and wished to communicate it to the other animals” ( Orwell 1) The use of symbolism indicates that the animals are raised in a society that is closely modeled after a human one. Such a concept can help everyone understand the inner-workings of a dictatorship making it all the more intriguing to read. The close similarity between real life and fiction that is brought by through the use of symbolism draws the reader into the novel as well as makes it easier for one to understand a dictatorship.

In A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens, Dickens uses theme as the foundation of his novel in order to illustrate the resurrection and ultimate heroism of one of his troubled characters, which leads to a satisfying ending of the book. Sydney Carton, an attorney who is constantly drunk and lazy, continues to waste his life away because he believes there is no hope left for him in the world. Because of his state, no one, even his friends take him seriously. However, Dickens hints to his readers that there is a rebirth somewhere within the novel. In the beginning, one of the characters named Jarvis Lorry writes on a slip of paper “recalled to life”. (Dickens 16) It is given the possibility that something miraculous and extraordinary will occur. Near the middle, Sydney talks to one of his friends Lucie Manette, and she sees that he has so much potential, yet he is mind is imprisoned. Sydney is grateful for her company and kindness, so he makes a promise to her. “If my career were of that better kind that there was any opportunity or capacity of sacrifice in it, I would embrace any sacrifice for you and those dear to you.” (Dickens 159) By saying such a strong statement, Sydney is implying that he cares so deeply about Lucie that he would be willing to risk his life for her and her loved ones. Odd enough, Sydney gets the chance to when Lucie’s husband Charles is sentenced to the French guillotine. Since they look alike, Sydney switches places with Charles to save Lucie and her family from the French Revolution. Sydney’s death shows that he is not only a compassionate person for others, but that he was resurrected from his wasted life and can die in peace. The theme in a story like the one here about the rebirth of a soul is vital since the idea pulls the entire novel together and gives readers the fulfillment of picking up the novel.

In Lord of the Flies by William Golding, internal conflict best portrays the chaos of the novel. Ralph, Jack, and the rest of the boys stranded on the island, have many difficulties to cope with. The boys have to fight like hell to remain sane and to find a way to get off the dreadful place. Overtime, insanity overcomes most of the boys. “His mind was crowded with memories; memories of the knowledge that had come to them when they closed in on the struggling pig, knowledge that they had outwitted a living thing, imposed their will upon it, taken away its life like a long satisfying drink” (Golding). This quote is from after they have killed the first pig. Jack was so distraught that he was unable to do anything other then fight with himself over what he had seen and done. Isolated from the rest of the world, the group of boys struggle to continue with human instincts; to keep order and avoid chaos and violence. Whether it was choosing which tribe to side with, or who or what to kill, each boy had an internal conflict to deal with.

In "Lord Of The Flies" by William Golding, tone is shown consistently throughout the novel. A tone is any sound considered with reference to its quality, pitch, strength or source. It seems that throughout his book he carries out a tone trying to teach us and warn us about our own evil. The tone is maintained more through the events and characters in the story than the writing style Golding brings fourth. An example could be the discovery of the man and the parachute. The writing style is remained constant throughout the book, but the event of finding the man and parachute as the beast, teaches us that it is not some monster we have to be worried about but ourselves. As well as this quote "..Ralph wept for the end of innocence, the darkness of man's heart, and the fall throug h the air of a true, wise friend called Piggy." (GOLDING 182). In This quote Ralph realizes that, although he is saved from death on the island, he will never be the same. Ralph has lost his innocence and learned about the evil that exists within all human beings. Golding connects the sources of Ralph's loss of hope to two of the main themes that have been brought out in the novel; the end of innocence and the “darkness of man's heart,” the presence of savage instincts does exist within all human beings, and even at the height of civilization as shown in "The Lord Of The Flies" by William Golding. The tone brought out in this novel has not only given the reader a sense of strength in the events of the story but an understanding of what savagery can lead to as well as bringing emotion.

In the novel Memoirs of a Geisha by Arthur Golden, the writer uses imagery as a literary technique to create the details in the story. The main character Chiyo also known as Sayuri lives in a little village in Japan called Yoroido with her sister, mother and father. Chiyo has a feature that no other Japanese women has; Chiyo has blue/gray eyes. When her mother became very ill she was sold to a geisha house, and separated from her family. Chiyo was then raised to be a Geisha in a town called Gion. The Geisha house she lived was very different form her life in Yoroido, and being a Geisha seemed to be the only thing to keep her from not making amends to her new family and friends. As Chiyo grew older she was known by her Geisha name Sayuri, and became a Geisha she learned how to impress men, and be graceful, and poise. At the end of the novel Sayuri goes through many obstacles to posses the man she loves. When the pages of Memoirs of a Geisha are first read Arthur Golden uses imagery in his first sentence is a use of imagery. “Suppose that you and I were sitting in a quiet room overlooking a garden, chatting and sipping at our cups of green tea while we talked about something that had happened a long while ago…..”(Golden 7). Golden uses Imagery so the reader can get a better image of how the elaborate kimonos Sayuri wears, and if the imagery wasn’t being used the story wouldn’t have the sense of passion the writer has when he wrote the book.

In the book Fallen Angels by Walter Dean Myers, symbolism is used to show the hardships soldiers faced during war in the book as apposed to the way they portrayed it in their own minds. Many of the young adults that had just enlisted in the military had an idea of war in more of a Hollywood way. Hollywood meaning a clear division of conflict as in the good side and the bad side or the rights and the wrongs and where well always prevails over evil. The war movies were an example portrayed within the book. Another symbol that was a big deal were the lost dog tags of the dead soldiers. This is so because the dog tags were used in the wars as an I.D. without these tags they could not be identified and in the book the soldiers that had died serving a great cause and was lost forever in the midst of the battle field when evacuation was rushed and the dog tags of the fallen soldiers also known as the fallen angels were lost. With the tags lost there was no evidence of the soldier’s lives and deaths. This symbolized that some soldiers did not die with dignity and meaning but, a meaningless one. Within the book it is realized that with each new death a past victory is forgotten.”My father used to call all soldiers Angel Warriors,” he said “Because usually get boys to fight wars. Most of you aren’t even old enough to vote yet” (Myers). In this quote the term fallen angels, represents the extreme youth of the soldiers and the fact that they barely grasped the concept of what they were fighting for. Symbolism has played a major literary device role in this book Fallen Angels by Walter Dean Myers.

In "Slaughterhouse-Five" by Kurt Vonnegut, the novel discusses the usage of the motif to explain how every death mentioned is followed with the phrase “So it goes”. In each chapter, several deaths are mentioned with the phrase “So it goes”, whether if it is the death that Billy witnessed during World War II in Dresden, Germany or even his wife, Valencia’s death. Billy lives a life where he times travels uncontrollably due to fact, he was kidnapped by aliens known as the Tralfadormian. Furthermore, the phrase follows every mentioned death to equalize all of them, whether they are natural, accidental, or intentional, or if they occur on a massive scale or on a very personal level. The quote reflects the view of each death following the phrase: “A doctor and a nurse ran out to find out what the trouble was. Poor Valencia was unconscious, overcome by carbon monoxide. She was heavenly azure. One hour later, she was dead. So it goes” (Vonnegut 234). The quote proves how it reflects the Tralfadormian idea of death. The Tralfadormian sees that although a person may be dead in a particular moment, he or she is alive in all other moments of his or her life like Billy, which coexist and can be visited over and over through time travel. However, on the other hand, the repetition of the phrase keeps a set of the cumulative force of death throughout the novel. Thus, the motif of the phrase “So it goes” in the novel, Slaughterhouse-Five by Kurt Vonnegut, shows the tragedy of the inevitability of death and how there will always be death, no matter what.
